We are thrilled to announce the arrival of the first litter from Captain and Venture, two exceptional AKC-registered East German working line German Shepherds. Both dogs hail from renowned pedigrees known for excellence in temperament and capability.
Venture, with her nurturing nature, friendliness, and medium drive, brings a balanced temperament to the mix. Meanwhile, Captain’s strong drive, coupled with his pronounced herding and protection instincts, promises to contribute to a lineage of German Shepherds that are not only loving and intelligent but also highly sociable and protective. This combination is set to produce puppies that embody the perfect blend of traits for both family life and working environments. We can’t wait to see the potential these puppies will have in shaping the future of the breed.

German Shepherd Temperament:
Windy Knoll Shepherds are renowned for their versatility, intelligence, and loyalty as shown by their pedigree and personal achievements. Here are some key traits of their temperament:
- Intelligence: Our German Shepherds are among the smartest dog breeds, often ranking at the top in canine intelligence tests. They are quick learners and excel in obedience training. When personally training them, it only takes a few times for them to understand a new technique or command.
- Loyalty: They are extremely loyal to our family. Most often, they form a strong bond with the owner/trainer, Greg. But they also adopt the rest of the family as members of their pack. This loyalty makes them excellent companions and protectors.
- Protectiveness: With a natural guarding instinct, our German Shepherds are vigilant and protective, making them one of the best breeds for personal and property protection. We see this in action every day especially when our children play outdoors. They keep track of each one of them and make sure that everyone is always OK.
- Confidence: They carry themselves with confidence, which is crucial in their roles as police, military, and service dogs.
- Versatility: Their temperament allows them to adapt to various roles, from family pets to working dogs in diverse fields. One of our Shepherds, Scout, found out how fun it was to jump into the goat pen and herd the goats.
- Courage: They are known for their courage, standing firm in the face of threats or danger.
- Sociability: While some GSD can be reserved with strangers, with proper socialization, they can be very sociable, enjoying interaction with other dogs and people. All our dogs are very friendly and sociable.
- Activity Level: German Shepherds have a medium to high energy level and require regular, vigorous exercise to keep them mentally and physically healthy.
Working Line Capabilities:
Windy Knoll German Shepherds from working lines are bred specifically for their working abilities rather than just show or companionship traits. Here’s what makes our dogs stand out:
- Drive: Windy Knoll Shepherds working line German Shepherds have a medium to high drive, which includes prey drive, play drive, and defense drive. This makes them highly motivated for tasks like herding, tracking, and protection work.
- Endurance: These dogs have been bred for stamina, enabling them to work long hours without tiring, which is essential for roles like police work, search and rescue, and military operations.
- Trainability: Due to their intelligence and desire to work, our dogs are highly trainable for complex tasks. They respond well to positive reinforcement and thrive on having a job to do.
- Herding Skills: Originally bred for herding sheep, these dogs retain strong herding instincts, making them excellent in agricultural settings or in competitive herding events.
- Protection and Security: Their protective instincts are pronounced, making them ideal for roles in security or as personal protection dogs. They are often used in police K-9 units for apprehension work.
- Search and Rescue: Their keen sense of smell, endurance, and drive make them perfect for search and rescue operations, where they can work tirelessly to locate missing persons.
- Service and Assistance: Their intelligence and adaptability also make working line German Shepherds excellent candidates for service dog roles, assisting people with disabilities, including mobility, hearing, or psychiatric support.
- Adaptability: These dogs can adapt to various environments and training scenarios, from urban settings to rugged outdoor conditions, making them versatile in their working capabilities.
Our German Shepherds, because they come from working lines, combine a balanced temperament with exceptional capabilities, making them one of the most valued breeds in both work and family settings. However, they require an owner committed to providing the necessary training, socialization, and physical activity to thrive.
