Proven Natural Flea and Tick Protocols for Your German Shepherd

Tick and Flea Challenges

Ticks and fleas are the bane of all german shepherd owners. These small insidious insects can cause significant discomfort and health problems in your puppy. We value our dogs’ well-being and enjoyment of the great outdoors. The threat of tick bites and flea infestations requires proven protocols on behalf of our dogs. WKS takes a holistic approach to the prevention and treatment of ticks and fleas.

Ticks

Ticks can transmit a variety of harmful pathogens, most notably Lyme disease. Many of the places we walk and exercise our german shepherds are prime tick habitat. Although we do not spray our dogs before entering meadow or forest areas, we daily mix garlic, a natural insect repellent, with their food. Often, in spite of precautions, our dogs are bitten by ticks. Prompt removal of ticks reduces the possibility of a Lyme’s infection. We will also treat with Natural Pet Botanicals microbial and then monitor the dog for typical symptoms of Lyme. These include reduced energy, loss of appetite, inflamed joints, and general malaise. If a dog has contracted Lyme’s, immune system support is essential. The Infection Fighter supplement and Vitamin C-Complex help build strong immune system responses.

Fleas

Just as with ticks, prevention is key with fleas. Again, our go to measure is garlic. When given regularly, it accumulates in the dog’s system and discourages unwelcome hosts like fleas. If your puppy becomes infested with fleas, we recommend the following natural treatment options. First, dust your dog’s coat and bedding with Diatomaceous earth. This chemical free organic powder smothers/kills fleas. The application works best when your dog’s coat and sleeping environment are kept dry. Second, wash your dog with a Neem oil solution. Neem oil is another effective natural insecticide. Make it by mixing 2 Tsp. of liquid Neem oil with 2 Tsp. of dog shampoo/soap in a gallon of warm water. Lather and work thoroughly into your dog’s coat before rinsing well.

Extra Steps

Sometimes, with severe flea or tick infestations, it is necessary to use a stronger treatment. These include tick collars, spot-on treatments, and oral medications prescribed by a vet. Be aware that many of these products contain potent neurotoxins and should be used sparingly. Essential oils are another proven natural protocol for ticks and fleas. Wolf Creek Natural Pet Wellness offers a great essential oil spray for this purpose.
